OCT 27

From 9 November 2009, there will be some changes to the road safety rules about using mobile phones and visual display units.

Changes to the new mobile phone rules
The new mobile phone rules have been revised. The change now allows both the navigational (GPS) and audio/music functions of a mobile phone to be used, provided the mobile phone is secured in a commercially designed holder fixed to the vehicle.

Mobile phones
Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited, except to make or receive a phone call or to use its audio/music functions provided the phone:

  • is secured in a commercially designed holder fixed to the vehicle,

Driveway accident prevention
Tips for improving safety while reversing

The problem
Tragically one child, often a toddler, is run over in the driveway of their home every week in Australia. The vehicle is usually only moving slowly and is often being driven by a parent, family member or friend.

A slow moving vehicle reversing down a driveway can trap a child, causing fatal crush injuries. Children who survive are often left with severe long-term injuries.

A vehicle’s ‘blind space’

Small children, particularly toddlers, can be impossible to see from inside a car, especially when they are behind it. Most drivers are aware of their car’s ‘blind spots’ however when reversing, drivers must remember there is a large ‘blind space’ behind their vehicle.  All vehicles have a blind space, the size of which varies between vehicles. An NRMA Insurance study measured the reversing visibility for many popular vehicles. The ...

Reporter: Sabra Lane

TONY EASTLEY: The New South Wales Roads Minister wants all new Australian cars to have audible reversing sensors. Eric Roozendaal will put forward the idea at a meeting at a Child Safety summit today.

Vehicle manufacturers have rejected the call, saying it would push up the cost of cars and make Australia internationally uncompetitive.

But the minister argues it's not a huge price to pay for saving scores of lives.

Sabra Lane reports.

SABRA LANE: In New South Wales alone, 66 children were killed in accidents on private property between 1996 and 2001. Most of them were run over by their parents or relatives, who were reversing the family car.

NSW Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal says it's a needless loss of life.

ERIC ROOZENDAAL: It's an ongoing issue. Every week or month we hear of a case of a toddler that's been run over, ...

Parrot CK3100-LCD

The Parrot CK3100 Bluetooth Car Kit improves upon the CK3000 by adding

a display that shows who's calling, last number dialed and more.

With the Parrot CK3100, you are able to handle calls in comfort and safety,
without ever touching your mobile phone. Voice recognition enables you
to place calls with both hands on the wheel, without taking your eyes
off the road. The wireless connection between the CK3100 and the
Bluetooth wireless technology phone is enabled as long as the phone is
turned on.

No need to insert the mobile inside a cradle. Your phone can remain in

your pocket, at the bottom of your bag, or on the backseat. At a time

when legislation is tightening up to restrict the use of mobile phones in

vehicles due to safety concerns, Parrot CK3100 benefits are not just for

the sake of convenience and comfort - they are fast becoming a real

necessity.
